InTASC Standard 5

InTASC Standard #5 Application of Content:

The teacher understands how to connect concepts and use differing perspectives to engage learners in critical thinking, creativity, and collaborative problem-solving related to authentic local and global issues (InTASC, 2013).

Brief Description of Evidence:

During the spring semester of 2022, as part of my EDUC 240- Introduction to Physical and Health Education for Elementary Teachers, I designed my own vision board about goals for my future and what I would like to work on. I chose to do a virtual vision board. I had the option to pick pictures and/or quotes to go with the 8 categories of wellness: emotional/mental, spiritual, social, physical, occupational, intellectual, financial, and environmental. I presented my vision board to the class and told the class why each of my pictures went with each category and why it was important to me.

Analysis of What I Learned:

Throughout designing and implementing the vision board, I learned more about myself and how I can start working towards my goals. I learned what I can do to start bettering myself. This is important because with my school work and everything that I feel like I am juggling I feel like I lose myself because I am so tied up with everything. The vision board helped me to work on each area to be closer to myself and the community. This project helped my anxiety because I was able to look at goals to help myself and think about what I could do to start.

How This Artifact Demonstrates my Competence on the InTASC Standard:

I have demonstrated my competence in this standard by being able to complete the vision board and have a deeper understanding of myself. I was able to present my point of view about why each of the pictures was important for me and to show the class my perspective. One theorist I think is important with this project is Carol Dweck, because she believed that having the right mindset is more important to success than being smart. According to research, "Carol Dweck says that success comes from having the right mindset rather than intelligence, talent or education” (Mind Tools Content Team). This means that if I ever feel unmotivated to do something, I should start by looking at my vision board to keep me motivated. This assignment helped condition me to not look back and not give up and just keep moving forward to accomplish my goals. I was able to create my own vision board by using whatever pictures, designs, colors, etc. I wanted to use my creativity. This project helps locally and globally with depression and anxiety, if all people did this, it would help them look forward to completing life accomplishments. I was able to connect the concept by being able to continue taking the steps to continue accomplishing making my goals. The vision board could engage learners by them being able to be creative and putting their own interests, and goals on their own board. The vision board could also work with collaborative problem solving, they could look at goals they would like to set for their community to become more involved.
